There are thousands of cheap replacement shields on Alibaba, AliExpress, Temu and eBay, in every colour you can imagine, sized to fit a Shoei, AGV, Arai, HJC or Schuberth. Most are certified to nothing. Here is what actually separates a real OEM visor from a knock-off, what the law says in BC and across Canada, and how to buy a tinted shield without gambling with your face.

What actually makes a visor safe

A face shield is not a sunglass lens. On a moving bike it is a structural safety part. The current European standard, ECE 22.06, became mandatory for new helmets in 2024, and for the first time it tests the visor as hard as the shell.

To pass, a genuine visor has to survive a 6mm steel ball fired at it at roughly 80 metres per second, about 288 km/h. It cannot shatter, crack through, detach or splinter. On top of that it is tested for optical distortion, refraction, scratch resistance, fog resistance where claimed, and a minimum light transmission so you can actually see through it. North American helmets follow DOT (FMVSS 218), and many premium lids also carry Snell. A shield moulded to hit a price point has passed none of this. It only looks the part.

Real shields carry permanent, cleanly etched certification like this ECE R22 marking. On a counterfeit the stamp is faked or missing, and there is no testing behind it either way. The etching is a clue, not a guarantee.

Short version. An OEM visor is engineered to flex, resist penetration and stay optically clear under stress. A copy is moulded plastic with a colour coating. They look the same on a shelf and behave nothing alike at 100 km/h.

The real dangers of a non-OEM shield

It shatters instead of protecting

The one job of a visor in a debris strike is to stop the object and hold together. Cheap replicas use inferior polymer and the cheapest tint process going. Testing of counterfeit lenses and eyewear keeps showing the same thing: they crack and shatter far more easily than genuine parts. A rock or a bird at highway speed turns a fake shield into fragments aimed straight at your eyes.

A single stone at speed. A certified shield is built to take this hit and hold. A knock-off is built to a price.

Optical distortion warps what you see

Real visors are tested so straight lines stay straight and distances read true. Uncertified shields are not. Subtle warping changes how far away a car feels and how fast it is closing. You never notice it in a driveway. You notice it when you misjudge a gap.

The tint is wrong, and often illegal

Those dark smoke and mirror copies rarely meet any light-transmission rule. Certified tinted visors are restricted and marked for daytime use only for a reason. A too-dark knock-off leaves you nearly blind at dusk, in a tunnel, or when the sun drops behind the North Shore mountains. Colour is a styling choice on the outside and a visibility problem on the inside.

It does not seal or stay put

OEM shields are cut to the exact base plate and gasket of the helmet they are built for. A generic shield that claims to fit an AGV often sits proud, whistles, lets in water, and in the worst case lifts or unlatches at speed. A visor that pops open on the highway is its own emergency.

No UV protection you can trust

Genuine shields carry a real UV-blocking layer. Counterfeits often skip it or fake it, so you get glare and long-term eye strain with none of the protection you paid for.

Insurance and liability exposure

Gear that fails to meet the required standard can complicate a claim. If a shield is not certified and something goes wrong, you have handed the other side an easy argument. Not worth it to save twenty dollars.

You are not comparing two visors. You are comparing a tested safety part against an unknown piece of plastic photographed to look like one.

Why "it looks identical" is the trap

This is the part riders underestimate. Modern counterfeits are convincing. AGV has said openly that for every fake listing it takes down another appears, and that some copies are good enough only the brand can tell. The listing photos are often lifted straight from the real product page.

So the logic of "it looks the same, why pay triple" falls apart. The label, the box, even a printed ECE stamp can all be copied. The testing behind them cannot. If a genuine Shoei, AGV or Arai shield runs 80 to 180 dollars and a seller offers the same thing in six colours for 18 with free overseas shipping, it is not the same thing. Nobody sells a real one at a loss.

The law in Canada and BC

Canada retired its own helmet standard decades ago and now relies on international ones. Across the country a street-legal helmet has to carry DOT, ECE or Snell certification, displayed on the helmet. In British Columbia it is enforced directly: operators and passengers must wear a helmet meeting one of those standards, and police can inspect helmets at the roadside and seize non-compliant ones. Your visor is part of that system. Fitting an uncertified shield to a certified helmet undercuts the exact protection the law asks for.

How to spot a fake shield before you buy

  • Price that is too good. A real branded visor is not 18 dollars. If the discount is impossible, it is fake.
  • No physical store behind the seller. AGV's own advice: legit online retailers have a real shop and a real address. None listed, walk away.
  • "Universal fit" claims. OEM shields are model-specific. One shield that fits everything fits nothing properly.
  • Lifted stock photos across ten sellers. Same image, no brand accountability.
  • Smudged or missing certification etching. Genuine markings are clean and permanent, not a peeling sticker.
  • Buy from an authorized dealer. The cleanest guarantee of a real part is a shop the brand actually supplies.
